He trained at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam and was a student of Martin Monnickendam. He specialized in cityscapes and landscapes, often inspired by Amsterdam and its surroundings. As a member of the avant garde painters' association De Onafhankelijken (The Independents), his work was exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum in the 1920s, alongside that of contemporaries
