The rayon and polyester blend has 4 times the absorbency of cotton. They can absorb up 7 times their own weight. There is no "break in" period that is recommended for the mop. It excels on more abrasive floors such as non slip non skid, stone, terrazzo, and concrete. The recommended handle for use with these mops, is the O'Cedar quick change wet mop
