Hatalla originally worked for the Central Construction Corporation but was laid off in November of 1931. After losing his job, he lived on credit, charity, civil works, and direct relief. In late 1935, he was transferred to the Works Progress Administration (WPA), and at the time of this publication, was working as a stonemason
