It was discovered in 2000 in the Bahariya Formation, in Egypt, and its name means "Titan of the Tide" , in reference to its probable coastal habitat and its enormous size. Its description was made in honor of the German paleontologist Ernst Stromer, who at the beginning of the 20th century
